This subversive methodology was established and solidified through Week’s earliest work, particularly in the series Ovahimba Youth Self-Portraits, a project that places the power of picture-taking back into the hands of historically fetishized subjects — both literally and figuratively. Since compiling the Ovahimba portraits between 2012 and 2014, Weeks has published a photobook of the seminal series, and explored similar themes with his project Palm Wine Collectors.
